VTT and RapidEye AG to co-develop satellite-image-based services

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and RapidEye AG, Brandenburg, Germany have signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning the development and marketing of satellite-image-based products and services.

The initial focus is on combining VTT’s technological leadership in forestry applications with RapidEye’s imaging and analysis capabilities. Both parties will provide regular and innovative solutions to the forest industry on a worldwide basis.
In the beginning, the co-operation will focus on the use of VTT’s method for forest characteristics estimation. The method is already in worldwide operational use with data from several satellites. Co-operation is also sought in the projects of the European Space Agency ESA, for example, to support the carbon trade.
RapidEye AG, an internationally operating independent German enterprise, will launch five earth observation satellites in 2007. The satellites will provide digital images daily from all over in the world with coverage of some four million square kilometres. The accuracy of the images is 6.5 metres. The company offers value added customer services by refining the image data.
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is the biggest contract research organisation in Northern Europe. VTT provides high-end technology solutions and innovation services for its clients, private companies, institutions and the public sector. VTT is heavily involved in many EU projects and in national and international innovation networks.
