Maki Planet Systems, a subsidiary of Corporate Carbon, an Australian carbon project owner & operator, commissioned Remote Sensing Solutions (RSS) to develop a dMRV tool dedicated to Savanna Fire Management for carbon projects. VeriFIRE is a data-driven platform that substantiates fire emission abatement by combining advanced AI and EO technology. At its core, it improves the accuracy and precision of spatial and temporal estimates of carbon emissions from wildfires, raising the bar for transparency in carbon project validation. VeriFIRE is basing on RSS’ platform technology VerifAId Transparency, an operational dMRV solution for Nature-based Solutions.
The real-world impact is already evident. Maki's prescribed burning operations in Botswana, covering the Chobe and Tsodilo Hills districts, have reduced fire emissions by over 20,000 tCO₂e. 2024's early dry season burning operations were so effective that no significant late dry season fires were recorded across either project area, all monitored and verified by VeriFIRE.
Remote Sensing Solutions GmbH is currently developing the platform to support two major use cases in Savanna Fire Management:
1. the operational requirements of prescribed burning teams
2. Maki’s emission abatement reporting requirements under various carbon methodologies (Verra's SFM methodology development (ID# CN0135) & the proposed methodology under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (A6.4-PMM005)).
RSS is thereby building upon two decades of experience in fire monitoring, carbon standards, MRV and automated data processing. After further system testing during the current fire season, Maki is planning to deliver this proprietary platform to their clients for credible carbon accounting by the end of the year.
