  • First issue of the redesigned Earth from Space magazine is published
Earth from Space from Space” – is a popular science magazine – is a popular science magazine” that introduces readers to the wide range of issues related to remote sensing data reception, further processing and application practices. In 2009-2013, 16 issues of the magazine were published – thematic collections on the areas of satellite imagery applications: forestry, construction, transportation, environment, education, web technologies, etc. In 2013 the edition has been completely renovated. This effected both design and content of magazine’s issues. Now the magazine has become bilingual, presenting scientific, popular, artistic materials adopted for non-professional audience. The founder and publisher of the magazine is ScanEx Research & Development Center.
  • Satellite monitoring for the detection of illegal vessels in the Komandorsky nature reserve
Starting from 2012 ScanEx RDC specialists have been working to identify illegal shipping within marine protected natural areas. Several test areas in the Arctic Region and the Far East have been chosen to evaluate the effectiveness of satellite data for monitoring the navigation situation within the reserve. One of the test zones was the “Komandorsky” State Nature Biosphere Reserve.

The role of SMEs (small medium enterprises) can be more and more relevant in facilitating EU Member States fulfillments required by the EU INSPIRE Directive.

This is the premise wich lead the creation of the smeSpire community, whose main purpose is to encourage and enable the participation of SMEs in the mechanisms of harmonising and making large scale environmental content available.

Among SmeSpire’s initiatives is the web portal which helps in promoting the best practices in this field at a European level. In this context Planetek Italia presented, and now are available on-line, two of its best practices:

KSAT has now enabled the capacity to process the Visible and Infrared Imager (VIIRS) onboard the NPP meteorological satellite.

This capacity is a results of an understanding between Eumetsat and KSAT to use the downlinks to the Svalbard station for research, education and demonstration purposes. This true color image shows one of the first examples generated by KSAT. The data was acquired 9. September 2013 and cover parts of the Barents Sea. ©KSAT

(August 2013) South Korea’s new multipurpose satellite sent beacon signals to a ground station in Antarctica after its launch from Yasny, Russia, on Thursday, indicating that the satellite successfully reached its target altitude and orbit, officials have said.

The Korea Multipurpose Satellite-5 (KOMSAT-5) was launched at 8:39 p.m. (11:39 p.m. Korean time) from Russia’s Yasny launch base, located some 1,800 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

“The launch vehicle successfully deployed the satellite approximately 15 minutes after its launch from the Yasny launch base,” Lee Sang-ryool, an official from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in charge of the KOMSAT-5 program, told reporters earlier. “Troll Satellite Station in Antarctica received beacon signals from KOMSAT-5 32 minutes after its launch,” Lee said.

Beacon signals were again picked up by Norway’s Svalbard Satellite Station at 10:06 p.m., further indicating the satellite’s successful deployment into its target orbit, according to KARI officials. Whether the satellite was successfully deployed and is functioning properly will be verified later when the satellite makes a radio contact with South Korea’s ground station in Daejeon at 2:35 a.m. on Friday, or five hours and 56 minutes after the launch, they said.

The satellite, also known as the Arirang 5, was sent into space using Russia’s Dnepr, a space launch vehicle converted from Russia’s Soviet-era intercontinental ballistic missile.

KOMSAT-5 is South Korea’s fourth multipurpose satellite, but it is the first with synthetic aperture radar with a 1-meter resolution, which will allow observation of the Earth’s surface, especially the Korean Peninsula, regardless of weather conditions. It will circle the Earth 15 times a day in the sun-synchronous orbit, or dawn-to-dusk orbit, for the next five years. (Source: GlobalPost.)

Additional contract with ESA for Sentinels DFEPs & Next generation telemetry receiver for the 26 GHz band to ESA

Kongsberg Spacetec has signed the first additional contract with ESA – European Space Agency – for the delivery of the first four Sentinels Demodulation and Front-End Processing System (DFEPs) to the Sentinels Core Ground Stations.

Kongsberg Spacetec has signed a contract with ESA to develop a telemetry receiver for the 26 GHz band. The receiver will represent the ground part of ESA’s technology development to support data downlinks in this frequency band for future LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and geostationary missions.
