New satellites are launched seemingly each week, new sources of data become available and new processing technologies are making it ever easier to access this growing mountain of data. In response, services are moving from being a project based market to being on-line and available on subscription; Information as a Service is the term being used.

These were launched for entities in 35 countries and generated $18.4 billion in manufacturing market revenues. Most of these satellites were launched by government operators to support policy objectives spanning climate change, sustainable development and industrial support. In addition, EO remains the primary application for emerging space programs; growing funding into these programs is a key driver for overall investment growth. Earth observation has contributed to the response activities in the recent Canadian wildfires. Aerial imagery and satellite data from sensors of all wavelengths and spatial dimensions were utilised to assess and combat the recent fires – most likely the biggest environmental catastrophe in Canada’s recent history. Due to its location near the Fort McMurray shale fields, the oil industry was quickly drawn into the disaster response, needing to demonstrate its readiness to shut down production, secure assets and evacuate people on a large scale.

Five years ago, when Skybox and Planet announced plans to image the Earth with unprecedented revisits, many observers wondered what data applications would be unlocked by these new platforms.
Friday, 14 October 2016. After the launch of Jason-3 on 17 January 2016, the two satellites flew in a tandem configuration, about 80 seconds or 500km apart from each other. This allowed for a precise comparison and direct cross calibration between the instruments flying on both platforms. During this phase, the instruments aboard Jason-3 were fully calibrated and have demonstrated performances at least equivalent to those of Jason-2. Based on these results, the satellite was deemed ready for operational service.
Planned to be launched by the end of 2017, the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission (ADM) Aeolus satellite will provide global observations of three-dimensional wind fields, which will help ito improve weather forecasting. The satellite will be operated by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The new three-dimensional map of Earth has been completed. Mountain peaks and valley floors across the globe can now be seen with an accuracy of just one metre. The global elevation model was created as part of the TanDEM-X satellite mission; it offers unprecedented accuracy compared with other global datasets and is based on a uniform database. The approximately 150 million square kilometres of land surface were scanned from space by radar sensors. “TanDEM-X has opened up a whole new chapter in the field of remote sensing. The use of radar technology based on two satellites orbiting in close formation is still unique and was key to the high-precision remapping of Earth. Pipeline operators are responsible for the safe transport of oil and gas through high-pressure transmission pipelines. In the Western world, these transmission pipelines are buried in the public space at a depth of about 1.5 metres. Operators are concerned with monitoring the integrity of their pipelines on a continuous basis, as pipeline failures can cause severe damage to people, infrastructure and the natural and built environment. This article discusses the use of Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite radar imagery to provide pipeline operators with a continuous source of information for monitoring and managing their assets from space.

On 14 September 2016 in Berlin, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the French space agency (Centre national d’études spatiales; CNES) signed a cooperation agreement for the design, construction and operational phases of the Franco-German climate satellite MERLIN in the presence of Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and Federal Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy, as well as Thierry Mandon, French Minister of State for Higher Education and Research. The agreement was signed by Gerd Gruppe, DLR Executive Board Member responsible for the DLR Space Administration and Jean-Yves Le Gall, the President of CNES. The small satellite mission MERLIN – Methane Remote Sensing LIDAR Mission – will measure the concentration of methane in the Earth’s atmosphere with unprecedented accuracy. The mission will last for three years.

(Sept 2016) EUMETSAT’s Director-General, Alain Ratier, and Dr. Gerd Gruppe, Director of Space Administration at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), signed a cooperation agreement for the development of the METimage instrument to be flown on three successive Metop-SG A satellites of the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation (EPS-SG) in the 2021-2042 timeframe.
EUMETSAT and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have signed a Technical Operating Arrangement (TOA) to support the exchange of data related to Copernicus, the Earth Observation Programme of the European Union.
As the result of an agreement signed in late 2015 between the Australian Government and the European Commission, Australian researchers will gain access to the imagery and data generated by the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, delivered by the European Commission with key partners European Space Agency and EUMETSAT. This data will be disseminated via research and education network infrastructure worldwide, initially through GÉANT (the pan-European research and education network) and in Australia by AARNet, in partnership with Geoscience Australia.
