The last 3 months have been an incredibly busy time for EARSC and to cap it all this edition of EOmag is the 50th!
It signifies that we have been publishing this magazine to inform the EO services sector for 12.5 years. The first edition in Spring 2005 featured an interview with my long-time friend Luc Tytgat who was then Head of the Space Policy and Co-ordination Unit in EC DG Enterprise and reported on the EARSC Industry summit that had been held just a few weeks previously. A socio-economic benefit study for GMES was about to be launched. EOmag was the brainchild of Monica who had just become EARSC’s first employee (part-time) to help the EARSC chairman who at the time was Paul Kamoun.
In that time, the EO sector has changed enormously and yet most of what was reported back then is recognisable today. Our membership has grown from around 40 back then to 97 as I write and now, as reported in the last EOmag, we have an office in Brussels with 5 employees and have established EARSC as an organisation well-known internationally throughout the EO services sector.Keep reading...
In September 2015, world leaders agreed on a shared vision about the world we want to see in 2030 by adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015, the United Nations has set out an unprecedented action plan to fight poverty and inequalities worldwide while respecting planetary boundaries.
Earth-i is an innovative and forward-thinking distributor of very high resolution satellite imagery. They plan to capture a significant share of the global market for Earth Observation services by launching Europe’s first commercial satellite constellation to offer both video and still images, and the first in the world to provide full colour satellite video.

Geoff Sawyer, EARSC SG, participated in the ISRSE symposium on 8th-12th May in Pretoria (South Africa) where he presented in 2 sessions. Thanks to the help of the local organisers, EARSC also organised a B2B session gathering 5 companies from Europe and 5 from Africa.
EARSC has recently developed its Internationalisation Strategy and one of its objectives is to support our members by opening up new market opportunities. In other words, EARSC would like to help developing the market for the commercial products and services. This includes new commercial market sectors and new export possibilities linked to national needs in countries outside Europe.
EARSC organised a session on Industry Contribution to SDGs on 20th June alongside the 11th GEO European Projects Workshop.
The workshop “Improving EO services industry involvement in EU space programmes and initiatives” organised by EARSC with the support of the European Commission was held on 26 April 2017 in DG-GROW in Brussels .
11 July 2017. EARSC published today a position paper entitled “Copernicus evolution: Fostering Growth in the EO Downstream Services Sector”.

The EARSC competition “European EO product of the year” rewarded a company which has developed a product which will support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at national, regional and/or local levels, and the monitoring and reporting against the global indicator framework.

Software developed by Action against Hunger uses Copernicus Global Land Service Products to estimate biomass/grassland production and water availability in the Sahel region.

The ‘Copernicus Goes Local – Implementing the Space Strategy for Europe’ event gathered more than 300 Earth Observation actors and industry representatives from across Europe at the European Parliament in Brussels. EARSC Secretariat and several members attended this launch ceremony.
AZO is currently looking for experts to become mentors of the Copernicus Accelerator programme, funded by the European Commission. The initiative aims to provide a tailored business coaching service to foster the development of commercial Earth observation applications and products.
The Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites are being used to detect and better evaluate management practices of grasslands in Estonia.
