Amazingly, EARSC has just celebrated its 25 years anniversary. The founding meeting for the Association took place on 1st June 1989 with the presence of a number of board members who still active in the Association today. I can mention particularly Marcello Marenesi and Emile Maes but there are others who we still see and meet.

Bruce Smith was the first chairman, Bill Jackson (who I worked for at the time) was the first treasurer and Rupert Hayden was the first vice-chair. As a summer job, maybe I’ll write a short piece on EARSC on Wikipedia and anyone who wishes to contribute will be welcome.

Successful launch of DEIMOS-2, the first Spanish very-high resolution satellite

DEIMOS-2, the first Spanish very-high resolution satellite and the highest-resolution fully private satellite in Europe, was successfully launched last June 19th. It acquires panchromatic and 4-band multispectral images over a 12-km swath, producing pan-sharpened or stereo images with a resolution of 75 cm. It began capturing images just 12 hours after launch, and has acquired more than 400 scenes in its first two weeks of operations. DEIMOS-2 is now fully operational after a successful early orbit phase, and it is undergoing in-orbit commissioning before starting full commercial service in the next few months.

Sri Lanka was in the process of designing, developing and launching of its own small earth observation satellite and the project would commence once the funds were allocated, Science and Technology Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

UNOG Library launches UNOSAT study that takes a look at piracy from above

(12 June 2014, Geneva, Switzerland) The UNOG Library Talk of last week in Geneva was dedicated to the launching of the new UNOSAT study on Piracy. This report is the result of five years of research in the area of geospatial information applied to piracy. The research, conducted by UNOSAT experts is the an attempt to look at piracy globally from a geospatial angle, combining mapping and satellite observations to reveal trends and patterns that can only be observed when “looking from above”

UNOSAT to partner with US Centre for Advancement of Science in Space to create new sensor capacity aboard Space Station

08 July 2014, Geneva, Switzerland –UNOSAT and The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) (www.iss-casis.org) have started a collaboration on technology applications that aims to develop and deploy a next-generation high resolution, multi-band hyperspectral imaging system onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
